Acne. It's a problem everyone faces at some point in their lifetime, but that doesn't make it any more reassuring when you're in the midst of a breakout. Acne can appear anywhere on the body, but nowhere is it more troublesome than on the cheeks. Since skin on the cheeks is very thick, acne can take root much deeper, making the likelihood of scarring increased. Many people are affected by acne but few understand the causes of acne. There are several factors that can cause acne.
1. If you naturally have oily skin, you are much more likely to suffer from acne on your cheeks. And this can be troublesome, especially if it feels like you're already washing your face all the time. Even so, there are treatments that can help modify the oil-content of your skin and bring it more into balance, such as various cleansers and creams. Just don't overdo it. Washing your face too much can actually encourage the production of more oil.
2. When hair follicles are obstructed, the sebum that is produced gets trapped and block or plug the follicle. This process called comedogenesis, produces a type of acne called comedones or what we typically call whiteheads and blackheads.
3. Whiteheads are a type of acne that results from a clog deeper in the pore. Due to the blockage, the oil has no where to drain so it accumulates in the pore. This creates small bumps that can be either the color of your skin or even sometimes white. This type of acne is often prone to inflammation; the inflamed pustule is what is often considered a pimple.
4. One of the biggest causes of cheek acne is heredity. Which is unfortunate, since you can't exactly control who your parents are. That being said, just because your parents had acne, does not mean you will as well. It just means that your likelihood of developing breakouts is increased.
5. Some cosmetics can actually cause acne or make it worse. Avoid products that contain oils and instead opt for noncomedogenic and hypoallergenic formulations.
6. Additional factors, such as hormones and hereditary characteristics, as well as medications can also aggravate or alleviate breakouts. However, the American Academy of Dermatology reports that contrary to popular belief, stress, diet and poor hygiene actually have little to do with the onset of acne breakouts.
