While the majority of teenagers will experience some degree of acne, this condition can actually strike at any time in a person's life. While there is not cure for acne that works for everyone, there are several treatments available that can manage, prevent or reduce the number of breakouts. But the first step is recognizing the many possible causes of acne.
1. This can be caused by a number of factors. The most common among them is the imbalance of sex hormones. Such an imbalance is at its peak during puberty. This is the reason that many adolescents and teens get victimized to acne.
2. Skin that is oily is more prone to acne breakouts. Many adult females with oily skin have acne, but those with dry or normal skin can have acne as well. The sebaceous glands in the body produce sebum to lubricate the skin. But hormones may overstimulate the oil glands, which causes then to produce too much sebum. This thick oil then clogs the pores, causing pimples.
3. While everyone has an opinion on what foods cause acne, there is little in the way of substantiated proof. Some studies indicate that the condition is more severe in those on a high carbohydrate and saturated fat diet. Others point to animal products like milk and meat which may supply inflammatory building blocks and hormones.
4. Acne is caused by not washing and scouring your face frequently enough: While it is true that proper hygiene can help keep acne at bay, too much washing can actually cause the skin to produce additional oil and in turn make skin problems worse. Also, scouring the face with various exfoliates can actually cause inflammation.
5. Secondly, too much of carbohydrates, sugars, fats or oils may disturb the hormonal balance, and thereby result in acne. Thirdly, a weak immune system makes your body more prone to microbial infection. This is the cause of both teens and adult acne breakouts.
6. Every day the skin is subjected to pollutants in the air. This dirt and grime accumulates on the skin and contributes to blemishes. If an adult female uses makeup, she is also adding chemicals to her skin that may irritate the skin and attract more dirt. It is important to thoroughly wash the skin and remove all traces of makeup.
7. The skin is always renewing and repairing itself. During this process, dead skin cells slough off. But if a person does not exfoliate the skin regularly to remove the dead skin, the debris can build up and clog the pores.
