Acne is caused by over-production of sebum. This sebum blocks pores. A variety of factors can lead to production of excess sebum including: fluctuating hormones, stress, medications, tight fitting clothing and genetics. Most mainstream acne treatments are not only much more expensive than common household items, but they also don't always work as well either. With that in mind, I will list some basic household items that can work wonders on clearing up your skin.
1. Baking soda is another readily available product in almost every household, which can be used for acne treatment. For treating acne with baking soda, mix baking soda with some water to make a thick paste and then use it as a homemade scrub.
2. Vinegar, Lemon Juice and Aloe. Each of these may be used with positive results on acne. The vinegar and lemon juice work to clean your pours. The aloe works to heal skin damage. Studies have shown that treating the sores with aloe will reduce scars and speed healing.
3. Pantothenic Acid (Also known as Vit. B5) - Pantothenic acid can be taken in large quantities for the benefit of acne reduction. B5 works by helping your body to metabolize fats which would otherwise be later turned into sebum (oil) and excreted through the skin. Small amounts of B5 won't help though, and it has to be taken several times a day.
4. Sleeping well reduces stress levels. Stress increases the skin’s oiliness which, combined with dirt and sweat, clogs pores. It’s thus very important to get a good night sleep so that stress does not stand a chance. Don’t forget to change the pillowcase frequently (every week) as it can get dirty very fast when used every day.
5. Sandalwood paste can be termed as an excellent home remedy for acne, acne scar and oily skin. For acne prevention and treatment, mix sandalwood powder with rose water to make a thick paste. Apply this paste on the acne or on your entire face, and let it dry out completely. Then wash it off completely with lukewarm water.
6. Raw Egg. To cure acne immediately, wash and dry your face. Beat a raw egg and apply this to your skin. Allow the egg to dry and stand on your skin for at least half an hour. The egg will immediately improve the look and feel of your skin.
7. Tea Tree Oil - TTO is a commonly used all-natural household antiseptic, which you can pick up at most drugstores or supermarkets. You can apply TTO directly to acne spots to kill bacteria, or, if you strongly dilute it with another oil (such as jojoba oil), over your entire face.
8. Try aloe vera gel to heal the acne lesions. Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and soothing properties, for which it can accelerate the healing of acne lesions.
